At least ten people have been killed in a bus accident involving wedding guests in Australia’s Hunter wine region, police said on Monday.
The vehicle transporting guests to a wedding at a local vineyard overturned Sunday evening. This is Australia’s highest fatality accident in 16 years.
Emergency services arrived on the scene to evacuate the injured from the crash area, with one injured in critical condition and 20 reported to be “stable”.
Police said in a statement that the driver of the bus, a 58-year-old man, was arrested after being escorted to hospital by security forces.
The driver received 10 counts of dangerous driving and had his bail application rejected before appearing in court, New South Wales state police said.
Deputy Police Commissioner Tracy Chapman said the driver was cooperating with the investigation and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
“It is so cruel, sad and deeply unfair that such a happy day in such a beautiful place should end with such a terrible loss of life and injury,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Hunter is a popular tourist area for its vineyards, kangaroos and forests.
