Ukraine: Russia considers IAEA visit to Zaporizhia nuclear power plant “very positive”

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency were able to visit this Thursday the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, subject to a fire, in the framework of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

It is “very positive” that experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have been able to inspect the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia on Thursday, although it is “too early” to assess their conclusions, the Kremlin ruled on Friday.

“In general, we find it very positive that the delegation has come and started work despite difficulties and problems,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“It’s too early to make an assessment (…) The team is still there, so it’s still early, but the most important thing is that the mission is there,” he added.

IAEA director ‘concerned’

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been occupied by Russian forces in southern Ukraine since March.

Its inspection on Thursday by an IAEA team, whose chief Rafael Grossi was present, was eagerly awaited, after weeks of bombing that raised fears of nuclear disaster.

The director general of the IAEA said on this occasion “concerned”, after having visited the plant, the target of strikes of which Russia and Ukraine accuse each other.

“The physical integrity of the plant has been violated on several occasions (…) deliberately,” he denounced.

Some members of the IAEA mission left the plant Thursday night, but others stayed behind.
