At least 10 dead and 41 missing after dam collapse in Ukraine

The floods derived from the destruction last week of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine have caused 10 deaths and 41 missing in the Kherson region, according to an updated balance of the Ukrainian authorities.

“We have ten dead in Kherson and the region… We also have 41 missing,” Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko announced on the Telegram social network.

The Kakhovka dam, located in an area under Russian control, was destroyed on June 6, flooding hundreds of square kilometers downstream, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents and raising fears of a humanitarian and environmental disaster.

The last balance of the Ukrainian authorities, on Sunday, counted six deaths and 35 people reported missing.

The governor of the Kherson region, Olexandr Prokudin, also indicated on Telegram the discovery of two new bodies of victims in the city, capital of the region of the same name.

“An unidentified woman and a 50-year-old man were found drowned in one of the city’s neighborhoods,” he said.

The governor had announced the day before that three people had been killed by the Russian army shelling a rescue boat that was evacuating civilians.

Ukraine accused Russia of destroying the dam on purpose to block the way in this southern region for its troops preparing a counteroffensive, but Russia claimed the dam gave way after Ukrainian shelling.
