The Pope criticizes “speculation” and “job insecurity” as new forms of poverty

Pope Francis criticized on Tuesday the speculation that “leads to a dramatic increase in prices” and precarious work as new forms of poverty, in his message on the occasion of the 7th World Day of the Poor, on November 19.

“We cannot ignore the forms of speculation in various sectors, which have caused dramatic price increases that further impoverish many families. Money is spent quickly, forcing sacrifices that compromise the dignity of each person,” criticized the head of the Catholic Church.

In his speech, released by the Vatican, the Pope referred to the inflation that aggravates the economic situation: “If a family has to choose between food for sustenance or medical care, we must pay attention to the voices that defend the right to both in the name of the dignity of the person”.

Francis asked society to take note of the “ethical confusion that reigns in the world of work.”

“The inhumane treatment that many workers receive, the insufficient remuneration for the work done, the scourge of precarious work, the excessive number of deaths related to accidents, often the result of a mentality that prefers quick profit to safety in the workplace. work”, listed the Pope.

Francis also recalled former Pope John Paul II, who defended that the first foundation of the value of work is man himself, stating that “man is destined for work” and that “work exists for man and not man for the job”.

He also addressed the younger generations, who, according to Francisco, suffer from a culture that increases the feeling of poverty and low self-esteem.

“I cannot fail to mention in particular an increasingly evident form of poverty that affects young people. How much frustration and how many suicides are being caused by the illusions created by a culture that makes young people think they are ‘losers, good for nothing’. “, he said.

The Pope called for realism and pragmatism in actions directed at the poor.

“It is also an insidious temptation to stick to statistics and numbers. The poor are people, they have a face, stories, heart, soul. They are our brothers and sisters, through good and bad, just like all of us, and it’s important to have a personal relationship with each of them,” she said.

The VII World Day of the Poor is celebrated this year on November 19, under the motto “Do not take our eyes off the poor”, in reference to the Book of Tobias.
