The Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, confirmed on Monday, July 28 that the Texas Factory of Samsung Electronics will provide fleas to its company, after the announcement of the Korean company of a $ 16.5 billion agreement.
“The new Samsung giant factory in Texas will be dedicated to the manufacture of the new generation of Tesla AI6. The strategic importance of this decision is undeniable,” he wrote on the social network X, of which he is also the owner.
Samsung had previously announced that an eight -year agreement had concluded, without appointing the client, describing it only as a “great global company”, in a regulatory document.
An agreement until the end of 2033
As part of this agreement of $ 16.5 billion (just over 14 billion euros), the association, which entered into force on July 24, with a production that must begin in 2026, will continue until the end of 2033.
“Personally, I will commit to accelerate the rhythm of progress. And the factory is ideally located, not far from my home,” Elon Musk said in a second publication.
The South Korean giant had announced at the beginning of the month to wait for a 56% drop for a year of its operational profits in the second quarter, due to the export to China of advanced components imposed by the United States.
Despite more than a year of efforts to compensate for the gap with its South Korean rival of electronic chips, SK Hynix, Samsung has found difficulties in providing large volumes of large band memories (HBM), necessary for artificial intelligence (AI).
Therefore, Samsung has become more towards the Chinese market, but now it is under pressure after Washington has imposed restrictions on this sector, which prevents US companies from exporting their fleas.
Two generations of “hardware” of Tesla to come
As the specialized media of Electrek summarizes, Tesla has already planned the next two generations of your computer that manages the autonomous driving functions.
The current generation known as “HW4” (for “hardware 4”), already provided by Samsung, would not allow you to go further in assisted driving functions, especially to go to 100% autonomous driving. However, it is a promise of Tesla since 2016, with an “100% autonomous driving capacity” option offered for the purchase of a vehicle.
“The next updates will allow your vehicle to almost obtain anywhere independently, with a minimal intervention by the driver (depending on the development and regulatory approval),” he says that the explanatory text of this option invoiced 1,500 euros currently in the US brand configurator.
In France, the repression of fraud recently described this promise as “deceptive commercial practice”, asking Tesla to “be fulfilled within 4 months,” said the statement issued at the end of June.
Therefore, progress is also expected with the next generation of chips, the “HW5” or “AI5” according to the new name chosen by Tesla to highlight the use of artificial intelligence (“AI” for the acronym in English), emphasizes Electrek.
