The French automotive market still in the mast medium in July

New car sales fell 7.7% in July for a year in France, with just over 116,000 units sold.

New complicated month for the French automotive market. New car sales remained at a very low level in July (-7.7% for a year), with just more than 116,000 cars sold, according to figures published Friday by the Association of Manufacturers and Team Manufacturers (PFA).

The French market, in net decrease for more than a year, accuses a 7.9% drop since the beginning of 2025, with less than one million cars sold, braking in particular by the waiting attitude and view.

There is no “new bonus” effect

The fall hits both the purchases of individuals and commercial fleets, AAA data said in a press release. Only short -term rental companies are progressing.

The French market has already accused one of the greatest falls in the European Union in the first half (-7.9%) with Belgium (-10.9%).

“The automotive market does not straighten and, without a doubt, it is expected and seen due to developments in government support measures for electricity. The new formula of the ecological bonus, a little more advantageous, does not have a significant effect given the deadlines between orders and deliveries,” said Marie-Laure Nivot, of the AAA data cabinet.

Gasoline and diesel cars collect the fall in the market: from the first seven months of 2025, their sales fell 34% and 41% respectively compared to the same period of the previous year.

Electric and hybrid progression

Hybrid models (with a small electric motor and a battery that is recharged while driving) continue to dominate 53% of sales in July (+7% for a year).

Electric vehicles increased in July (+15%) thanks to mass purchases of fleets, but people’s disinterest keeps them 17% of the market.

“Combined with the expected electric lease at the beginning of the school year”, the new bonus “could finally restore attraction for people by electric cars, but it will not necessarily be enough to finish this long sequence down in the spring of 2024,” said Marie-Laure Nivot.

On the side of the manufacturers, Stellantis (-8.73% for a year) took over the market in July after a June dominated by Renault (-7.68%).
