The renewable energy sector will contribute 13,700 million euros of income to the State by the year 2023, according to a balance reported this Wednesday by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).
These revenues come from a special mechanism to support renewable energy established since 2003: the State guarantees a certain level of electricity purchase price to renewable energy operators, who on the other hand pay the difference when market prices exceed this guaranteed price -which is the case today.
By virtue of this support mechanism, renewables will continue to contribute money to the State in 2023, as in 2022, a year marked by a record rise in electricity prices in the markets.
However, the windfall will be less significant than expected: “Charges related to supporting renewable electricity and gas therefore still represent a significant revenue for public finances in 2023 of 13.7 billion , but that is 25 billion less than the expected income. in the deliberation of the CRE on November 3, 2022, due to the sharp drop in wholesale prices that has occurred since then”, in the electricity markets, explains the CRE.
