Bruno Le Maire confirms the tax cuts: “We will do them gradually until 2027”

A guest of France Info’s morning paper, the Economy and Finance Minister indicated that a schedule of tax cuts announced by Emmanuel Macron would feature in the next public finance bill for 2024.

Bruno Le Maire says a little more about the tax cuts that the executive is considering until the end of the five-year period. Invited to the set of France Info, the head of Bercy recalled that two levers have been targeted: the reduction of taxes on production “which weigh in particular on industries” and “that of households for two billion euros”, as Emmanuel Macron announced last May.

The Minister of Economy and Finance also highlighted the fiscal history of the Head of State since his arrival at the Élysée Palace in 2027. “We have lowered taxes by more than 50,000 million euros since Emmanuel Macron was elected President of the Republic, it is considerable, he insisted. Despite this, we maintain a level of mandatory taxes among the highest in developed countries”.

No new energy aid

If he wants to reduce the taxes collected by the state, Bruno Le Maire also wants to reduce public spending, particularly in the field of energy. He thus returned to the increase in the regulated electricity rate by 10% since August 1, while the tariff shield had already reaped a 15% price increase last February. “We bear almost 40% of household electricity bills, 37% to be exact,” he recalled. “We continue to protect households, but the principle of responsibility is gradually that everyone pays for electricity at market prices with the protection guaranteed by the French State: there is no recovery.”

The Bercy boss reaffirmed the doctrine that he has had for several months: the exit “whatever the cost” to speed up the deleveraging of France. “If you continue spending public money while we are coming out of the inflationary crisis, gas prices are lower than before this crisis and electricity prices start to fall, that is called irresponsibility, he stressed. From the moment the Covid shock has passed and the worst of the inflationary shock has passed, we must gradually return to normality. This return to normality will result in particular in the absence of new aid even though energy controls for the most modest households are maintained.
