Fuel: are we at risk of shortages of food products in our stores?

The lack of fuel could eventually lead to shortages of certain food products in stores. In question, the difficulties encountered by road carriers to obtain fuel and ensure their deliveries.

Will certain products disappear from supermarket shelves soon? With the conflict between TotalEnergies and Esso-Exxonmobil refinery employees and their management stalling, the specter of a food shortage is slowly rising.

Because in addition to affecting individuals, the fuel shortage weighs primarily on professionals who have to drive as part of their activity, starting with road carriers, and especially those who transport goods at controlled temperatures.

Already on Tuesday, the refrigerators that supply, in particular, the stores in the territory with meat products, fish, fruits and vegetables, prepared dishes and fresh or frozen products, sounded the alarm.

Refrigerated transporters, doubly affected

The refrigerated transport sector is particularly affected. Trucks used to transport steaks, ham or yogurt require both conventional diesel to run and off-highway diesel to operate their refrigeration units. This is what allows them to keep food cold.

The association “The cold logistics chain -which represents 50,000 employees and nearly 100,000 refrigerated trucks- warned “about the risks of interruption in the supply of fresh and frozen products to customers of transport companies: industrial, large distribution, catering outside the home”.

A fear for weekend deliveries

A situation that has not improved this Friday since 29.1% of service stations continue to lack one or more fuels in the territory, according to the latest figures from the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

According to Valérie Lasserre, national delegate of La Cadena de Frío, 97% of the 120 associated companies said they had difficulty finding fuel this Thursday.

Supermarkets effectively deliver massively on Saturdays, the day of maximum concurrence in food stores. The second crucial moment of the weekend is Sunday night, which marks the week’s shelf fill, after this peak.

On Thursday, System U president Dominique Schelcher said about him, on the air of France informationthat “there were no signs to date” of shortages in its stores and that “there was nothing to worry about.”

To deal with this drop in fuel, the group makes its own service stations available to its carriers. The official also indicated that System U imported “foreign fuel to compensate for the quantities that are not available.”
