Canada gives up in front of Trump and withdraws a tax on technological giants to achieve a customs duties agreement

Ottawa cancels the digital services tax and hopes to finish a commercial agreement with Washington at the end of July.

The connection is restored. Canada announced Sunday to cancel a tax aimed at technological giants in the hope of reaching a commercial agreement with the United States and the resumption of negotiations in this regard built two days before by Donald Trump.

Canadian finance minister François-Philippe Champagne, “announced today (Sunday, editor’s note) that Canada will cancel the Digital Services Tax (TSN),” said a government statement. The latter specifies that the resumption of negotiations must lead to a commercial agreement with Washington before July 21.

This relaxation between Canada and the United States occurs two days after breaking the discussions of US President, who had described “direct and obvious” brought to the United States the Ottawa tax addressed to digital giants.

This 3% drilling in online advertising revenues, sales platforms, social networks or the sale of personal data, had to enter into force on Monday and, particularly, to touch US technology techniques.

He went significantly to Google, Apple, Meta (Facebook), Amazon or Microsoft’s Mastodons. They are accused of taking advantage of the intangible nature of their activity to escape taxes.

Donald Trump and the White House did not react immediately.

The TSN had been temporarily adopted last year, waiting for the culmination of international negotiations on multinational taxes.

This tax was aimed at digital players that generated an annual global turnover of more than $ 1.1 billion of Canadian and annual income in Canada more than 20 million Canadian dollars.

“Complex negotiations”

On Friday, Donald Trump described the TSN as “scandalous” in its social social application and indicated that the United States would communicate in Canada, within seven days, the level of customs tasks that would be imposed.

From the return to the power of Donald Trump in January, the US administration announced, then suspended, waiting for negotiations, several taxes on Canadian imports to the United States, while Canada has taken reprisals imposing customs tariffs.

In particular, the US president has attacked the automotive, steel and aluminum Canadian sectors, while the United States and Canada are, with Mexico, a member of a free trade agreement (aleum or USMCA in English).

The relations between Ottawa and Washington deteriorated under the second mandate of Donald Trump, who has repeatedly requested that Canada will become the US state 51.
