The airlines agree on a common size of suitcases that do not give rise to a supplement (but these suitcases do not exist in trade)

The agreement that will be applied after the summer season defines a dimension of 40 × 30 × 15 cm wide and refers to free luggage that will be placed under the seat in front of you. However, this width refers to backpacks.

As we know, not only European airlines charge the transport of a cabin luggage on board, but also all apply heterogeneous rules with respect to their maximum dimensions that, if exceeded, give rise to overload. A situation that irritates the European Parliament that wants all airlines to accept two teams on board for free.

Waiting for this distant perspective, the Association of Airlines for Europe (A4E) that brings together most European operators, announces that its members agreed a common manual luggage dimension that can be taken in the cabin, to be placed under the front seat. “Airlines For Europe has confirmed that its member companies now apply the guaranteed dimensions of 40 × 30 × 15 cm for the cabin luggage usually placed under the front seat,” they can be read in a press release.

Plus a backpack than a suitcase

Therefore, it must include that the classic luggage of the cabin, which is placed in the storage on the seats will continue to be invoicing, but that the companies have agreed to the small free hand luggage that can also be taken in the cabin.

Good news? Yes and no. Because if a single size will finally avoid overloading depending on companies, the chosen size is not really standard. In fact, it is almost impossible to find small cabin suitcases 15 centimeters wide, the smallest that makes at least 18 centimeters wide. As we can see on this site, the choice is summarized in backpacks or dressing table …

The fact is that the standard size proposed by the A4E represents a guaranteed minimum, companies may apply their own policies, such as Ryanair. The first low -cost European company announces that its “personal luggage (free) (would be) (would) greater (would) the European standard, 5 centimeters …

Remember that Spain has inflicted record fines for an amount of 179 million euros in several airlines for its additional costs for cabin luggage, considered abusive.
