“It’s time for the middle class, family and young”: why the Greek government wants to reduce taxes

The Greek prime minister has announced a series of tax rooms for families, young people entering the labor market and rural areas. A first since 2018.

“It’s time to support the middle class, the Greek family and young people,” said Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday night during the speech to return to school in the reimbursement of international background by announcing tax alleys.

The conservative prime minister said that Greece for the first time since the end of the economic crisis in 2018 was going to make a tax drop of 1.6 billion euros to particularly support families, middle classes and young people entering the labor market. More than 4 million taxpayers should benefit from these measures.

“We support the company despite the fact that we will have to spend money in our national defense in the coming years (…), but I do not make concessions on the security of the country,” he said that 10,000 people had met in Salares to protest against the government and, in particular, a new labor law.

More children, less taxes

“We add an arrow to our laugh in the battle against the demographic problem,” said the conservative leader, stating that income tax alternatives would be established next year for Greek families. Inspired by the French model, the more a family has children, the more it will have actions. Families with four children will not pay taxes at all, the prime minister also said.

Greece is among the five European countries with the lowest fertility rates, women with an average of 1.4 children for decades, while the renewal rate of a generation is 2.1 children per woman. Since 2011, Greece has had 500,000 inhabitants in less according to the censuses made by the Greek authorities.

The property tax will be reduced by 50% next year for villages of less than 1,500 inhabitants. The islands near Türkiye, with less than 20,000 inhabitants, will also see their reduced VAT by 30%.

“Greece has the lowest salary in the euro zone”

“But the most revolutionary measure refers to young people,” said Greek prime minister. Young workers up to 25 years with income of up to 20,000 euros will be exempt from taxes, while those between 25 and 30 years will obtain a significant tax reduction.

“Regardless of the amount of promises that Mr. Mitsotakis will announce today, he cannot hide what all the Greeks know, that Greece has the lowest salary in the euro zone, which Greece has the weakest purchasing power,” said the leader of the left party Syriza, Sokratis Famellos.
