Calculator – How many French are richer than you?

One in two French households has more than 177,200 euros, one in 10 has more than 716,300 euros and one in 100 more than 2.24 million euros. And where are you?

€177,200. In 2021, this was the median gross wealth (before loan repayments) of French households according to INSEE. That is, half of them have more and the other half less. An amount that places the French among the richest on the planet. In fact, average wealth is higher in France than in the United States or Germany, for example.

If in your home you have an apartment estimated at 178,000 euros, for example, and even if you don’t have anything in the bank, you are already part of the 50% of the richest French people according to INSEE.

To be in the richest 10%, the amount is much higher. The assets of these households effectively exceed 716,300 euros. Finally, to be part of the 1%, that is, of the 282,000 households that have the most in France, the bar stands at 2.24 million euros.

So where does it stand on the heritage scale in France?

To find out where you stand, list your gross assets, that is, the value of any fixed assets (even if you haven’t paid them off in full), and anything you have in the bank or in stocks.

What is this family wealth made up of in France? It depends on the level of wealth. On average, real estate represents the main resource with 62% of the wealth of all households. But the higher you go up the social scale, the greater the importance of professional wealth in the total, rising from 11% for all households to 34% for the richest 1%.

Last element to take into account regarding wealth: it evolves throughout life.

Among those under 30 years of age, gross wealth is one and a half times greater than net wealth (71,200 euros compared to 43,200 euros), since they are just beginning to pay off their loans.

The average gross wealth reaches 400,000 euros in households where the person of reference is between 50 and 59 years old, while the average net wealth reaches its zenith in the sixties with 361,400 euros, to drop slightly to 343,800 euros among septuagenarians.
