Constrained fuel prices: Michel-Edouard Leclerc believes Totalenergies “can do more”

With the “fabulous benefits” it has obtained, Totalenergies “can make a little more effort,” Michel-Edouard Leclerc estimated this Thursday at RMC and BFMTV, the day after the announcement of a maximum price for fuel at 1.99 euros the liter by the oil group.

“At the moment, he does not eat bread.” Invité sur RMC et BFMTV ce jeudi, Michel-Edouard Leclerc s’est montré skeptical face à l’annonce de Totalénergies de plafonner les prix des carburants à 1.99 euro le liter dans toutes ses stations à compter du 1er mars et jusqu’à the end of the year.

In fact, prices are currently below €2 per liter and there is no guarantee that they will go any higher. “It does not say the discount rate that [Totalénergies] it will do, nor the amount of restitution that it will make to the French for the fabulous benefits it has obtained”, continued the head of the Leclerc centers, suggesting that Totalenergies lower the ceiling below 1.99 euros per liter.

In recent days, the government has urged the oil group that made huge profits in 2022 to act with a new support system.

“It can still do a little bit,” he insisted, adding that several big retailers were already selling cheaper fuel than the hydrocarbons giant today.

Michel-Edouard Leclerc asks for a gesture for large surfaces

If Michel-Edouard Leclerc judges positively the fact that Totalenergies “makes restitution to the French of their super profits”, he called on the oil group to make a gesture “to its redistributing clients”, in this case the supermarkets, and not only “to your clients on your network.

“I can’t promise that [un plafonnement des prix] because Totalenergies is our supplier, so we will see the conditions that it will give us”, stressed the head of the Leclerc centers. According to him, the stations of his stores are supplied at 25% by Totalenergies.

In more general terms, “if the President of the Republic is eager to challenge supermarkets and especially refineries, he could suggest that all French people can benefit” from this drive “through all networks, including small employees of gas stations,” added Michel-Edouard Leclerc. And call on all refineries to take a step: “I think it would be fair if Totalenergies were not the only one to do it.”
