There are more than a hundred to sign a petition. These MEPs call for the creation of a wealth tax for the “ultra-rich”.
“What we have achieved for the multinationals, we must now do for the great fortunes”, write, in a column published in Le Monde, Aurore Lalucq (group of Socialists and Democrats, left) and the economist Gabriel Zucman, behind this campaign.
The authors mention the idea of a taxation of 1.5% from a wealth of 50 million euros, while stating that the exact level of the tax must be decided “collectively and democratically”.
A progressive international tax
Aurore Lalucq and Gabriel Zucman call on the OECD and the UN to start negotiations on this tax, and urge the European Union to act.
They claim that in 2018, Elon Musk, then the second-richest man in the world, “did not pay a penny in federal taxes” and that in France, “the 370 richest families actually only pay 2-3% in taxes.”
His petition was signed mainly by left-wing and environmental MEPs, by a dozen economists and by international NGOs, including Oxfam.
To support their assertions, they cite the example of the minimum 15% tax on the profits of multinationals, to which nearly 140 countries have adhered “when all repeated that it was impossible.”
