In the face of inflation, should annual trade negotiations be abolished? This is the proposal of the president of Super U. In a column posted on LinkedIn, Dominique Schelcher calls for an “end” to “targeted business negotiations.”
Every year, between December 1 and March 1, the prices of food products are negotiated between manufacturers and distributors. These negotiations, framed in the law, are the subject of bitter discussions between the two parties, particularly today in the context of inflation.
Anti-inflationary quarter
The government has managed to convince distributors to follow their “anti-inflationary quarter” in exchange for a relaunch of trade negotiations starting in June. “An appointment still too far away”, advances the president of Sistema U.
When “commodity prices skyrocketed” at the start of the war in Ukraine, “everyone agreed on the need” to renegotiate prices. “Now that the trend is starting to reverse,” “industrialists are in much less of a hurry to get back to the table,” he laments.
“A new context, a new method: that we are allowed to negotiate throughout the year so that sales prices follow the evolution of the markets as closely as possible,” claims the manager of the Super U and Hyper U stores.
