After Poland, Slovakia announces the delivery of Mig-29 to Ukraine

Bratislava will deliver 13 Mig-29s to Ukraine, says the prime minister. Slovakia thus becomes the second NATO country after Poland to make such a decision.

After equipment, weapons, armored vehicles and tanks, Ukraine’s allied countries are responding to requests from kyiv, which has been asking for combat aircraft for several months. Bratislava announces the delivery of thirteen Soviet-designed Mig-29 fighters, the prime minister said on Friday.

Waiting for the F-16 and the Mirage 2000

Slovakia thus becomes the second NATO country after Poland to make such a decision. Yesterday, Warsaw announced the shipment of 4 MiG-29 while waiting for another fifteen under maintenance.

It remains to be seen if the United States will send F-16s and if France will sell Mirage 2000s. Ukrainian pilots are already receiving training in the United States on American planes.

As for the Mirage 2000-C, Sébastien Lecornu acknowledged that it is being discussed during a Senate hearing on February 28. The Minister of the Armed Forces specified that the difficulty in the delivery of aircraft is based on logistics, training, mechanical maintenance capacity “all this in time horizons that are obviously not short-term.”
