By 2026, the number of millionaires will have increased by 41% in France and doubled in China

According to Credit Suisse’s Global Wealth Report, the number of millionaires worldwide is expected to rise from 62.5 million to 87 million between 2021 and 2026.

The growing number of millionaires. According to Credit Suisse’s Global Wealth Report 2022, nearly 62.5 million people had wealth of more than $1 million worldwide in 2021, up from less than 40 million in 2017. And the numbers are expected to continue to grow until exceed 87 million in 2026.

With an estimated 27.7 million millionaires in 2026 (up from 24.5 million in 2021), the United States will remain largely at the top of the ranking in five years, ahead of China (12.2 million, +97% compared to 2021) and Japan (4.8 million, +42%).

France, for its part, lost 26 millionaires in 2021. But their number should pick up quickly and go from the current 2.8 million to 3.9 million in 2026 (+41% in five years). So much so that France will maintain fifth place in the ranking, behind the United Kingdom (4.7 million in 2026, +64%) but ahead of Germany (3.4 million, +26%).

42,000 “ultra-rich” in Europe

As for the ultra-rich whose net worth exceeds $50 million, that should be 385,000 by 2026, or 121,000 more in five years. More than half of these ultra-high net worth individuals” currently reside in North America, while countries in the Asia-Pacific region (including China and India) are home to more than 67,000. That already far exceeds the few “ultra-rich” 42,000 live in Europe today (including 4,640 in France), notes Credit Suisse.

And the gap is expected to widen as the Asia-Pacific region welcomes an additional 51,000 ultra-rich by 2026, half of whom will come from China. By that date, China alone will have about the same number of people with assets of more than $50 million as all of Europe.

World wealth grows 12.7% in 2021

Total global wealth is expected to grow to $169 trillion by 2026. In 2021, it has already risen 9.8% to $463.6 trillion, or $87,489 per adult. Excluding exchange rate movements, this corresponds to growth of 12.7%. However, its evolution for 2022 remains uncertain given geopolitical tensions.
