Liquefied gas, an energy that reinvents itself

[CONTENU PARTENAIRE] Used by thousands of companies, liquid gas is now evolving to be decarbonized. Antargaz is accelerating on the subject and, in particular, offers biopropane deals. Its president, Anne de Bagneux, tells us about its challenges.

Tell us about the Antargaz experience?

Antargaz is a French company in the energy sector, with more than 80 years of experience. Historically we have supplied liquefied gas, propane or butane, easy to transport and store. It is used as fuel for light vehicles, under the name of LPG-C, but also in the form of bottles for cooking, for example, or tanks for heating or thermal processes.

Our clients are companies, individuals and farmers located in the 25,000 municipalities not connected to natural gas. We have 135,000 corporate customers who use our gas for their processes, especially in the food industry or public works. 10 million French households use our bottles and more than 200,000 vehicles use LPG-C.

Since 2022, we have gone further, with our partner Wenergy, offering support to professionals in the field of energy efficiency, which is further strengthened this year.

How does liquefied gas respond to the challenges of energy sovereignty?

Faced with the challenges of independence and energy resilience, liquefied gas is an essential energy. It does not come from Russia, so it is not affected by supply problems. Many large companies have come to us for a year to convert part of their processes from natural gas to liquefied gas, in order to avoid any risk of shortages and control their costs, because our energy has increased, but with little fluctuation and volatility.

How can this energy be part of a balanced and carbon-free energy mix?

We are convinced that it is essential to maintain diversity in the French energy mix, and the energy crisis has shown this. At the same time, we are in the middle of a transition to decarbonize this energy. We have launched biopropane offers for companies. This biopropane is produced from used oils, in France, which allows us to relocate our production. This reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 73% compared to conventional propane. In England we are also working on a new product, RDME, produced from waste. It can replace or mix with propane gas. Our ambition is to inject at least 15% renewable liquefied gas into our offer by 2030

Today we talk a lot about electrification, but it is important to remember that 80% of the uses of our industrial clients do not benefit from technical solutions to be electrified. We are convinced that our energy has a future, and that it is essential for certain uses whose sustainability must be ensured. We mobilize so that political decision-makers give us time to continue with this transition.

Do you also apply these commitments to reduce your own emissions?

We have long been involved in energy saving programs at our industrial sites, which we are accelerating given the context. We are also working on its solarization, and we will be able to self-produce 30% of our needs in the coming months. On the logistics side, we are committed to reducing our emissions by 25% by 2025. To do this, we already have more than 160 trucks that run on HVO, a biofuel produced in France, and we will continue to invest.

Today, our mission is to contribute to supporting a full transition towards renewable liquid gases by 2050. In this context, Antargaz aims to occupy a central place within this sector that is essential for the preservation of the French energy mix.
