Is the job market experiencing its first signs of exhaustion? According to a Dares note published on Monday, hiring in France fell for the second consecutive time in the fourth quarter of 2022 with 6.5 million contracts signed, 1.6% less than in the previous quarter.
After peaking in the second quarter of 2022, resignations, which had risen sharply during the post-Covid recovery period, are also falling again. In the fourth quarter of 2022, 472,617 CDI terminations were registered. This is 1.1% less than in the third quarter already marked by a fall of 2.2%.
But it is still too early to talk about a change in the market trend. Hires in all of 2022 (26.1 million) remained 6% above their 2019 level (24.6 million). Similarly, the number of resignations (1.9 million) remained higher in 2022 by almost 25% compared to the pre-Covid period (1.5 million).
In total, adding all the causes (layoffs, retirements, contract terminations, etc.), resignations represented 45% of the completion of permanent contracts last year. Not to mention the end of the trial period and contract terminations, which are up 30 and 14% respectively between 2019 and 2022, which in some cases can be similar to resignation forms that do not say your name.
Quit rates remain high
CDI decreases in the fourth quarter of 2022 are above their pre-crisis level in all sectors: +36.4% in the agri-food industry, +27.3% in information and communication, +24.6% in commerce, +16.7% in accommodation and restaurants… A trend that shows that employees have gained bargaining power in a context of recruitment difficulties in various branches of activity.
The CDI resignation rate also remains particularly high: on average in 2022, out of 100 permanent contracts, 11.4% ended by resignation. This is almost two points more than in 2019.
This proportion is even higher in the hotel and catering sector (31.2%, compared to 27.7% in 2019), commerce (12.8%, compared to 10.3%) or construction (11.7% , compared to 10.4%).
