Pinocchio is getting a lot of attention from directors this year. A few months after the launch of Disney + live-action remake with Tom Hanks As Geppetto the wood carver, acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro has teamed up with Mark Gustafson to launch their stop-motion animated film, which will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15. Newcomer Gregory Mann voices the titular puppet who comes to life and is surrounded by a few heavy hitters in the Pinocchio problem with Ewan McGregor as Wise Cricket and David Bradley (Harry Potter deductible e game of Thrones) like Geppetto. Ayomikun Adekaiyer of experienced person he says the musical numbers are disappointing and the themes of war and death may be too dark for young children. However, the producers managed to turn the classic story into an updated admonition for parents, saying:
The original story can be a warning to children against disobedience. Del Toro addresses parents warning them to show their children that they love them regardless of their flaws and hope, as Jiminy says in the film, that they will do their best.
Leslie Felperin from THR calls the film “perfectly flawed,” noting that this remake brings back some of the darker elements of the original material that was polished into the 1940 Disney animated film. Guillermo del Toro’s hand is felt in every frame of this film, he states. The critic :
From supernatural creatures with strange spectators scattered over their bodies, like one of Pan’s Labyrinth’s most famous monsters with his eyes in his hands, to carnival settings reminiscent of his latest film, Nightmare Alley, and Watery Kingdoms that echo The Shape of Water. and other catalog efforts, the film is sometimes interpreted as an album of the greatest hits of the tropes del Toro. The avid fans of the author, whose number is legion, will probably go into delirium for self-citations; the more critical and less indulgent viewers may find this self-referential a distracting sign of grandiosity or even laziness.
Raphael Motamayor IndieWire gives the film an A, saying that the Oscar-winning director is able to take the oldest form of animation to new places and, like the film itself, give life to inanimate objects. According to the review:
Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic fantasy tale through the most beautifully executed stop-motion animation in years, a powerful and vital father-son story of acceptance and love in the face of pain, misery and fascism and the love of the director for the monsters in what is easily his best film in a decade.
Damon essay by Term , however, says he was unmoved by the experience and thinks the film may be too macabre. He argues:
For all his heartfelt homilies, however, Pinocchio is a strangely immobile experience, and the intermittent musical numbers are not as memorable as animation. Fans of del Toro’s brilliant visual style won’t be disappointed, but like Nightmare Alley last year, there may be too many superficial details and flourish when he really needs a little more charm and wonder.
Nicholas Barber of the casing states that the director celebrates disobedience in this captivating project, comparable to his previous works with its themes of death, pain and misunderstood monsters. He says:
It’s intense, scary, and often heartbreaking material, so you can understand why del Toro said in interviews that his Pinocchio is not a children’s film. But that doesn’t mean brave kids and brave adults don’t like it. Reviews appear to be mostly positive, with all critics pointing out how much this story clearly meant to Guillermo del Toro. However, we still have some waiting time before we can see its adaptation. Pinocchio is scheduled for release on Netflix on Friday, December 9th.
