In the middle of a cloud of smoke, with his arms extended towards the audience, Slimane sang his song. My love on the big stage of Eurovision 2024 to be held in Malmö, Sweden, this year. During the second semi-final of the contest, this Thursday, May 9, the French candidate performed his song a cappella, wearing a steamy white suit.
“I love you, I don’t know why I’m playing here,” he said excitedly to the audience.
France, directly qualified for the final of the European singing competition scheduled for Saturday, May 11, does not participate in these semifinals. But the French candidate has for the first time the chance to demonstrate her skill live, like the other five countries already automatically selected for the final: Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain.
“A song that sounds like him”
Earlier this Thursday, the artist told BFMTV that he had “tried to make a song that looked like (him).”
“I aim for the place of pride, I want to be proud of myself, of my team, of what will remain, of the video that I will show my daughter when she grows up,” he declared again.
Slimane, who began making a name for himself in France by winning the talent show The Voice on TF1 in 2016, is now well established in the French music scene. The artist can boast of notable titles: more than 40 million views thousands of I love you, one of his hits, on Spotify, leader in the streaming music market. During her duet with singer Vitaa, who now also performs solo, she even topped the album sales ranking in France in 2020 with her work Versus.
France has not won Eurovision since Marie Myriam in 1977. In recent history, since the great performance of Barbara Pravi, second in 2021, France is disappointed. Alvan & Ahez, emerging artists like her thanks to the jury and public vote, in use in recent years in France, finished second to last in 2022.
