Spoilers ahead for the 100th episode of the residentcalled “For better or for worse”.
the resident has officially reached a milestone that many TV series do not even come close to: 100 episodes. The show survived everything from the protagonist’s departure to COVID, which led to production challenges, and “For Better or Worse” was a celebration of what made the show last so long with so many problems. Between a girl who needs a liver, crew struggles to raise money for Chastain and time is running out before the wedding with Bell still stuck in surgery, there were many things that could go wrong. In the end, though, the resident I was surprised in many ways. The ending was … happy!
I may have seen too many medical dramas (and even one recently as he called me for that ), but with all the plot threads in the balance for most of the hour, I expected at least one of them to end in tragedy. Even when all was quiet in the final moments of “For Better or Worse”, part of me was hoping that at the last second something bad would happen that would create all sorts of complications for episode 101. and beyond . So what were all the pending threads with potentially disastrous resolutions, most of which ended well?
Kit and Bell have been cut out of their own marriage.
If there’s one thing that’s true of television as a whole, it’s that marriages rarely go smoothly, and the resident she didn’t even let Kit and Bell finish their rehearsal before she had to get a call from the governor’s office and he had to go back to Chastain with Corrado trying to treat a potential donor’s daughter. Add to that lost luggage, surgery with life-threatening complications and the passing of the hours, and it seemed the happiest couple might be hoping some people were staying up late at night.
But the wedding happened, and almost everyone who planned to attend did! gift decided to skip the wedding in order to be there for a young patient who needed her when she woke up, but everyone was there and full of smiles as Kit and Bell walked together down the aisle, with Jack available to officiate at his ex-stepfather’s wedding (and sing a beautiful rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” at the reception). Crises were not entirely avoided, but marriage prevailed!
critically ill patients survived
The medical stakes of “for better or for worse” were high enough when the only person whose life was in danger was a girl who could only communicate through sign language; The situation became even more serious when the young max.the mother of Tracy learned that he could not safely donate a lobe of his liver due to a previously undiagnosed heart condition. Max had no hope of getting a UNOS liver in time, so against his best judgment, AJ agreed to extract the lobe with Sullivan plan to do the transplant.
And between Tracy who had a heart attack without having time to break her chest and Sullivan injecting Before the operation (and the IUD because of it), I really thought that mother or daughter were doomed. But Bell made a save through Tracy’s middle part that knocked out AJ and read it was available to help save Max’s life. They both survived, and I’m not saying I cried when Max woke up and said “thank you” after Cade told him the good news, but there was some of dust in my living room.
Chastain could get your funding
Good news could come from the imminent death of Tracy and Max: thanks to the tireless work of Chastain’s doctors, mother and daughter have survived … and Tracy has more reasons than ever to donate money to the hospital. It is not necessarily enough to prevent them from becoming, to quote Kit, a “third-rate hospital” in light of the cuts to the state budget, but it would certainly help!
And Kit has made progress, too, although he has not yet been able to meet the governor. After obtaining information from her office, she took the issue to Twitter and then to local news with help from the lovely. Sami, who walked out in front of the camera to share her story of how Chastain saved her. It was enough for Kit to at least meet the Governor, which is more than she had at the beginning of the episode!
Billie and Conrad had a great time … no lines crossed
Although Corrado e billy they were separated for most of the hundredth episode, he spent the day helping Gigi finds a replacement bridesmaid dress after Conrad is called back to Chastain. Despite her relationship with Cade apparently still going strong and overall nice enough, he realized at the wedding reception that he hadn’t thanked Billie enough for what she had done for him and Gigi. As they danced, he said it was nothing because she loved them both, and the two doctors became much more comfortable with each other.
And even though I’ve usually been on Team Billie since last season, I had a few moments of fear that one of them would cross the finish line and turn around. the love triangle in the background In a real problem Conrad is with Cade and they really care about each other. If something happens with Billie, it should happen when neither of us is attached to anyone else. Fortunately, it turned out to be just a sweet moment of friendship between them, even if there are unspoken feelings.
Basically, aside from the fact that Sullivan stepped up his drug use to steal injectable painkillers before undergoing surgery, “For Better or Worse” was a celebration of the resident characters.
