Australian-American star Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award at the 81st Venice Film Festival on Saturday (September 7), subverting her glamorous image in little girla new generation erotic thriller. But she had to leave the festival before the announcement of the winners, after learning of the death of her mother, aged 84. In her absence, the film’s Dutch director, Halina Reijn, read a message from the actress on stage:
“Shortly after my arrival in Venice I learned of the death of my mother Janelle Kidman. I am in shock and I have to be with my family.
“She trained me, guided me, and made me. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to speak her name in front of all of you through Halina,” she continued. “The collision between life and art is overwhelming, my heart is broken.”
Sensual thriller
the actress ofEyes wide shut (1999) and Moulin Rouge (2001), who has never left the screen, is exposed like few times in this new role, where she plays a New York technology magnate who has a sultry affair with a young intern that leads her to a gentle sadomasochistic game.
“It’s a film about desire, pleasure, inner flaws, secrecy, marriage, truth, power and consent,” Nicole Kidman summed up in Venice.
“It’s a woman’s story and I hope it’s liberating. It’s told by a woman and through her female eyes, that’s what makes it so unique to me.”
The Golden Lion was won by Pedro Almodóvar for the film The room next doorFrenchman Vincent Lindon won the award for best actor.
