FBI Finally bringing back Missy Peregrym as Agent Maggie Bell after a long absence, her first case won’t be easy for her. After being exposed to sarin gas April resulted in a lengthy layoff as she recovers, the Bureau books a double homicide for Maggie when she joins the team. Ahead of the episode, the actress explained to Gossipify why Maggie’s return would be risky…and why Maggie’s partnership with OA will need to be redefined.
The first episode of Missy Peregrym is titled “Ready or Not” and will air on Tuesday, November 15th. Not only will Maggie have to investigate her double murder, but she’ll reveal something about her to her partner that makes him worry about her. In light of the episode title, I asked the actress how ready Maggie was to get back into action, and she shared:
she doesn’t know, I mean, she thinks it’s okay. The Bureau told her she was fine, so after long therapy and being analyzed by the Bureau, she comes back. She misses her team and wants her life back. But wanting to and getting involved and taking risks again is a whole other side of things. And it’s really hard even for OA to get me back.
Considering that the last case Maggie worked on involved enough exposure to sarin gas that she almost certainly would have died if OA hadn’t done everything he could to save her, it’s easy to see why her return to work might be difficult! Missy Peregrym explained because he found it easy to identify with Maggie Back Based on your feedback on whether or not Maggie is ready, it sounds like it won’t be easy for her character…or for OA.
His partner had an incredibly difficult time with his near-death experience in Season 4, not helped by the fact that it has already been filmed for the case of sarin gas. OA has also undergone a own recent trauma with Zeeko Zaki sharing how she could have done it he handled the situation differently if Maggie had been there. Missy Peregrym got a glimpse of what their partnership looks like after spending time with her character out of commission:
It’s complicated, because you can’t forget what happened. Some things you need to fix in real time. You can talk about it all you want, but until you find yourself in situations, you won’t really know what you’re going to do or how you’ll feel. I don’t think OA really cared about their side of things. So she brings her a lot of stuff and gets incredibly overprotective, which isn’t safe with our job. We can’t do our job. Our whole company takes risks and is very open and cautious about it. But when you doubt, that’s when things go wrong.
Being overprotective isn’t something that can work when it comes to a job that requires agents to risk their lives for the greater good. Though he’s tried to protect her in the past, it seems like “Ready or Not” will show a whole new side of OA as she deals with her trauma side of hers as Maggie does the same alongside her. She has her challenges that come back after seven months; How will she react to the way he handles her return?
Fans will have to tune in to the episode to find out, but this isn’t the first time Maggie has returned to her regular job after being away for some time. Just as the sarin gas was used to temporarily say goodbye to Maggie for Missy Peregrym’s maternity leave and the birth of her daughter, Maggie was sent a secret mission at the end of the second season so that the actress could take her son’s maternity leave.
Going back to that time wasn’t easy for her, as she lost someone important to her while working undercover. I asked how Maggie’s mood returning to work this time compares to her return from her sting operation, and Missy Peregrym shared:
Undercover was just more, it was always part of the job. Sometimes people get lost. It’s the risk of having someone you work undercover with that things can go wrong, and everyone is aware of that risk. It’s not easy when someone dies, but it’s a bit tiring when it was much more intense. It makes you question yourself and it scares you to take risks and it scares you to do your job and it changed the dynamic between me and OA, because it’s something we’ve been through together, and it didn’t happen the first time. It was just me. That was me undercover and that was my story. How do you redefine your relationship when you are both going through trauma? [That’s] basically when we are dealing with that weather.
While Maggie’s first case in season 5 (and the redefined status of her partnership with OA) will be difficult, fans can celebrate the actress’ return after such a long absence. To Shantel Van Santen for all humanity replaced Maggie as Officer Nina Chase while she was away (and Nina will be back, according to the executive producer ), but there was no replacement for Maggie.
