Streaming services are constantly competing, and Hulu has released a ton of TV and movie content. we finished recently The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 which is the penultimate piece of the property. The ending was full of suspenseful moments. , with Nick in Gilead’s custody and his wife Rose seemingly on the verge of divorce. But could Nick and Rose find themselves separated according to the rules of Gilead? This is what The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller told us.
Rose, Nick’s wife, is played by actress Carey Cox in the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale (opens in a new tab)and she was one of new and more intriguing characters . Namely, because I knew her history with June and her role. on Waterford’s death . But the latest episode “Safe” saw Rose take on her husband after he beat up Lawrence and signed a new contract with the Americans. She says she doesn’t want to marry Max Minghella’s character, but how would that work for her? I have had the privilege of speaking with The Handmaid’s Tale writer/creator Bruce Miller on this storyline, where he explained that a split is possible. as he said,
I think there is a separation from Gilead as there is for many people in the Edwardian era or earlier. When there were no divorces in England, they lived completely separate lives.
It’s interesting. While the idea of a divorce from Gilead doesn’t exist, it seems possible that high-ranking members of society could part ways quietly. Whether or not this will actually play out in season 6 remains to be seen The Handmaid’s Taleor whether Nick and Rose will try to make it work despite how June continues to view their relationship.
Carey Cox has appeared in five episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale this season as Rose Blaine. And I have to admit, I’m still curious to learn more about her relationship with Nick and what she knows about June’s situation. During our conversation, Bruce Miller revealed how/why they met in Gilead and told me:
Rose’s character has a real-life disability. And we’ve turned that character off on the show, because we don’t see a lot of people in Gilead who are disabled because they don’t let those kids live. So I think being another stranger is the basis of their good relationship. Both are people who feel like a square peg in a round hole in Gilead.
In fact, another reason Rose is such an intriguing character is that she’s the only disabled person we’ve seen in a position of power in Gilead. As Bruce Miller shared, Carey Cox herself lives with a disability, with her Instagram bio of her referring to herself as a “little Ehlers Danlos.” She the actress shared what it was like working on set and how Hulu made sure she was supported through the long and grueling filming process. And it seems that Rose and Nick’s sense of differentness is what brought them together as a couple.
Gilead seems like a dangerous place for someone like Rose, but it was revealed in season 5 that her father is a high-ranking commander. However, we have seen other wives jealous of her pregnancy and competent comments made in front of her. Later in our chat, Bruce Miller explained how the Blaine family may be more progressive than some of their peers, saying:
Nick has his job as an integral part of the revolution and Rose has her family to protect her. So I think they both can be a bit radical and I think that’s why they met.
With the sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale being the final entry into the program for anyone who has a Hulu subscription , the stakes are certainly high for the entire cast of characters. It’s unclear if Carey Cox will return as Rose, but it certainly seems logical. Unless Nick gets punished for beating up Bradley Whitfod’s Commander Lawrence. But with so many questions about Nick’s wife, let’s hope we get more out of the Blaines.
