As Kanye West multiplies his troubling statements, a Chicago art school has decided to strip the artist of an honorary degree. The School of the Art Institute announced Thursday that it had made this decision due to recent “anti-black, anti-Semitic, racist” comments made by the rapper.
The American establishment, which had awarded this title to Kanye West in 2015, also intends to condemn these statements that it considers “dangerous”, in a press release released by the independent.
“Ye’s actions do not align with SAIC’s mission and values, and we have revoked his honorary degree,” the art school added.
“Disgusting” and “Damnable” Comments
Kanye West received this honorary title for his contribution to the art and culture of the country through his music. But in the wake of the rapper’s recent controversial departures, a group called “Against Hate at SAIC” started a petition on Change.org calling for the artist’s title to be revoked.
“Regardless of your contribution prior to winning this award, it is dangerous to allow Kanye West to continue to run the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while proclaiming hate and violence,” the petition read.
On the petition’s home page, art school president Elissa Tenny called Kanye West’s comments “disgusting” and “damnable.” “It was a difficult decision to make, and one that was thoroughly deliberated,” she said, adding that this is the first time in 80 years that the school has revoked someone’s title.
