At this point, it seems Nicolas Cage has it all done. He’s been an action star, had a lead role in a romantic comedy and won an Academy Award for Serious Dramatic Role. Still, it’s a cinematic challenge that Cage, who we must admit has directed an absolutely unbelievable number of films, has never quite succeeded. He’s never done a musical, but he’d love to.

Honestly, Nicolas Cage in any musical would look perfect. Musicals are, by their very nature, films that exaggerate reality to an extreme, and Nicolas Cage has been known to play exaggerated characters, even playing an exaggerated version of Nicolas Cage. He would be perfect in almost any musical. And playing the antagonist of Jesus Christ Superstar seems like a perfect fit. While Cage plays more heroes than villains, he can definitely play the villain, which would give him even more license to push the performance up to 11.
When it comes to Cage’s singing abilities, the honest fact is that as long as Cage is “good enough,” he probably has a good chance of being cast in a musical at some point. While most musicals are obviously looking for the best singing talent, we’ve seen many movies where successful actors still have a chance to sing. Not everyone has to be a Grammy winner to be in a musical. Sometimes we’ve seen maybe pretty bad performances in big Hollywood musicals.
It’s almost a surprise that Cage hasn’t done a musical yet. The actor has made many films in recent years, although Cage responded by saying that he was only doing it for the money.
The biggest problem with Nicolas Cage being huge in a musical is the simple fact that they don’t do that many musicals anymore. While the genre has never completely died, we usually only get one or two major musical productions for the big screen in any given year, which is far fewer than decades ago. And welcomed cats a few years ago, I’m not sure if anyone is looking to make a film adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical any time soon.
