Six years after the success of the the earthDamien Chazelle returns to the cinema with Babylon. This historical fresco chronicles the transition from silent to talkies in Hollywood over the years and features big screen star Brad Pitt.
The actor plays Jack Conrad, a late-career comedian trying to stay on top. Present in Paris for the film’s preview at the Grand Rex, Brad Pitt returned to the microphone for BFMTV, in this role assigned to him by Damien Chazelle.
“I feel close to him. Like him, I’m still passionate about movies, I want to push my limits. I still have this fire in me,” he says.
“It was a dream to work with him”
And it is in particular because of the commonalities between the 59-year-old actor and the main character of the film that Damien Chazelle called Brad Pitt. “Brad is part of a tradition of great Hollywood stars, which is less and less,” the filmmaker told BFMTV.
And to add: “It took a real star to play the role of a movie star like Jack Conrad. […] It was a dream for me to work with Brad and see how he turned the role I wrote into something personal and intimate.”
Brad Pitt says he also enjoyed working with the filmmaker, the youngest Best Director Oscar winner for his film. the the earth released in 2016 with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stones.
“With him it goes faster because even though the takes are long, people come and go. We’re looking for the perfect take and when we get it, we can go eat,” Brad Pitt jokes into the BFMTV microphone. “It looks like a race and it’s a lot of fun.”
15 years of reflections
If since then he has worked in many other successful movies like lash (2014) either First Man: The First Man on the Moon (2018), more than 15 years ago Damien Chazelle had the idea for the script of Babylon.
“I wanted to know where we come from, the origin of cinema. During the Babylonian era, Hollywood was transformed into a huge industry with a lot of money. This change has fascinated me for a long time,” she says.
To give Brad Pitt the answer, the filmmaker turned to actress Margot Robbie, who plays the character of Nellie LaRoy. She is accompanied on screen by Diego Calva, Jean Smart and Jovan Adepo. Babylon It will be released in French cinemas this Wednesday, January 18.
