I don’t know if you saw Britney Spears headlines this weekend, but they weren’t exactly the warmest of her career. The pop legend of hers was apparently eating at a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley with her husband Sam Asghari and their bodyguard of hers when she became “maniacal” and she stormed off. A video of the incident in which she allegedly said “nonsense” has since circulated. Last night, she posted a video in response that shows her dancing and wagging her middle finger to The Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself,” and it all garnered some media attention.
This media attention started when TMZ ran a story yesterday morning that showed video taken by someone at the restaurant that appeared to show Spears talking to a restaurant employee and then shielding her face from being seen. She apparently left shortly thereafter, with witnesses allegedly claiming she was acting “manic” throughout the case. The incident has since been covered by a variety of other outlets, including Yes The Daily Mail. And the noise has only gotten louder since Spears posted the aforementioned video of her turning off the camera and dancing.
Taken together, many take all of this as a reason to point fingers and talk about Britney Spears, but I think there’s actually a lot more context needed here. Parts of this story are, in my opinion, understated and are used to paint the singer in a negative light. So let’s go back for a second and give some context.
Britney Spears emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s as one of the most popular pop stars in history. She was just a teenager when she first rose to fame, and after producing a string of hits, the media circus around her grew to the point that paparazzi followed her almost everywhere. She subsequently got married, she divorced, and after a series of high-profile mental health incidents involving photographers stalking and attacking her, she was placed in a pavilion.
After more than a decade under guardianship, mostly led by her father Jamie Spears, Britney Spears was finally granted her freedom in November 2021. She soon married Asghari and has spent the last year doing a number of things she never did. do first. You are not permitted to include, but are not limited to, drinking coffee, using an ATM card, and setting your own schedule. She also enjoys posting on social media, where she is open about her feelings about guardianship and she posts many speaking videos and pictures, sometimes in an NSFW way.
However, fans have repeatedly complained and especially in the last six months that Spears is rarely seen outside the house. In fact, her lack of public appearances has led to her Instagram comment section being bombarded with conspiracy theories wondering if she is okay or if something is wrong with her. The conversation got so loud that she even had to mute her comments on most of her posts.
So to recap, we have a woman who rose to fame at an early age and was put in a room after a series of incidents where she was harassed and followed by members of the paparazzi until she went on a rampage. For the past six months, this same woman has been relentlessly harassed on social media by fans asking why she is no longer seen in public. So this woman finally decides to go to a random restaurant near her house with her husband, and what happens?
Well, according to TMZ, almost immediately after she arrived, “guests whipped out their cell phones and started filming her.” Did you see the real video of her at the restaurant? It was taken from a table by someone sitting diagonally. So, to be really explicit about this, after she walked into the restaurant and random fans started overtly taking pictures of her, another diner at a table next to her pulled out her phone and said she started filming it.
Now, I wasn’t at JOEY, the restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, and I have no idea what Britney Spears said to other customers or employees. Maybe she was rude. Maybe he really was talking “bullshit” as people claim, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that if I was going out to eat with my wife and someone at the next table whipped out their phone and started recording me too I got up and if went away.
I mean, considering all of this, is it really that weird that she went home and dropped the next middle finger video?
Not sure exactly what happened inside the restaurant. Spears may have done things that weren’t like her. I do not know. But it’s absolutely ludicrous for anyone to think that Spears should have sat there and dined while an army of customers whipped out their phones and started videotaping her as she tried to eat in peace. And it’s absolutely ludicrous for anyone to think they have to take out their phone and take pictures and videos of celebrities inside restaurants. If I tried to eat and people kept filming me, I would also start acting like a “freak”, and I’m sure many other people would do the same.
