When Rian Johnson did it knives out the movie was such a hit that it spawned not one but two additional sequels, turning the one-off mystery into a full-fledged franchise. Two of the movies are out now and the sequel, glass onion, it was as big a hit as the first one. However, Johnson now says there’s one major thing he hopes will make the third film in the franchise very different. You want to change the subtitle.
The full title of the second film, at least from a promotional point of view, was Crystal Onion: a mystery at loggerheads, which doesn’t really make sense, since the two films have completely separate stories and characters, and only Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc appears in both. The thing is, I totally understand it. It’s not like it was against my will or anything. I understand well. Because after the first movie, I think people knew they liked “Knives Out.” [but] they didn’t necessarily know him well enough to know who Benoit Blanc was. I think he would have attracted blank stares. And I wanted everyone who loved “Knives Out” to know about it [‘Glass Onion’] it’s the next of those. So I absolutely 100% agreed and totally understood that we had to do this.
As Johnson says, it makes sense that Netflix would want to include knives out in the title of glass onion because the name of the film has more notoriety among the general public than the character embodied by Daniel Craig, Benoit Blanc. You want people to search for the file knives out next to know glass onion and he knives out continuation. The film had generally been called knives out 2 before it had an official title because nobody knew what to call it.
That said, the only connection between the two films is the character. The idea of calling the entire film franchise knives out it really doesn’t make sense. Both stories are crime thrillers, but are otherwise highly original in the way they approach it, each finding different ways to turn the genre upside down.
But Rian Johnson is hoping the third film in this series won’t be called a mystery of knives. Instead, thanks to the fact that so many people have met Benoit Blanc and know his name, the writer/director hopes that’s the subtitle used to let people know what the next film in the franchise is. But also, it kills me and I want to see how fast we can lose that sub. As soon as we can get past them and get to “A Benoit Blanc Mystery”… and I will say, by that, with the reach of Netflix and how many people I think have seen it and how many more. it seems like it’s really in the culture, at least we’re getting close to getting away with “A Benoit Blanc Mystery” and people would know what we’re talking about.
We probably won’t know for sure what the subtitle of Benoit Blanc’s next film will be until the promotion of the film begins. By then, the first two films have probably continued to find new fans, so it seems like there’s a good chance everyone knows who Benoit Blanc is.
