Danger! Fans are definitely known for playing by the rules and it doesn’t matter which host is standing behind the lectern. Social media users have criticized Mayim Bialik for her share of alleged mistakes, such as calling the first round “Single Jeopardy!” – and it’s Ken Jennings’ turn to face a backlash, with parts of the fan base accusing him of showing favoritism towards the defending champion in the Sept. 14 episode of Danger!
Luigi de Guzmán has four straight wins after a searing match on Wednesday in which some believed he had received an unfair advantage from the host. For the “Cons” category, contestants saw a painting and were asked to identify their British artist. When Virginia’s lawyer called and said, “What is Constant?” Ken Jennings asked for clarification, to which de Guzmán replied:
Sorry, who is the agent?
This answer was accepted and de Guzmán was rewarded accordingly. The Danger! The rules state: “Contestants can change their answers as long as neither the host nor the judges have made a decision.” The controversy over that decision arose when competitor Harriet Wagner, in the same game, made a mistake and was found to be incorrect, even though she got the correct answer before the time was up.
Viewers voiced their views on Twitter, with most comments on the rather upset situation where Jennings allowed Luigi de Guzmán to correct himself, but not the challenger. For instance:
I’m mad at @KenJennings because he was being unfair on @Jeopardy tonight. She allows Luigi to correct his mistake and interrupts Harriet as she corrects his mistake … favoring Luigi again! Very obvious to me!September 15, 2022
Mocking spectators disliked the inconsistency with which Ken Jennings asked the champion to repeat the same thing, only to then immediately interrupt Harriet Wagner when she gave the correct answer. This fan pointed out that the money exchange would put Wagner in her place to win the game in “Final Jeopardy!”
After Luigi was beaten, Harriet had every right to be angry. She could have been at an impressive theoretical distance. #DangerSeptember 14, 2022
Some have even taken the plunge by theorising that a Danger! correction was at stake and wondered if the host and the judges preferred the multi-day sample:
Wow, did @jeopardy fix himself? Why is Luigi able to correct himself, but not Harriet? #WTF #dangerSeptember 14, 2022
Others wanted to know why Jennings had even asked Luigi de Guzmán to repeat his answer in the first place, when he was clearly wrong as claimed. He should never have had a second chance to respond, fans argued.
So the guy clearly spelled the wrong name. Ken asked her to repeat it and she corrected herself with the correct answer. Why didn’t Ken say wrong? Why is it allowed? #DangerSeptember 15, 2022
The same candidate took to Twitter for a lengthy explanation of what happened from his point of view and to publicly apologize to Harriet Wagner:
After watching the outsider game with cold eyes again, I want to say that I probably owe @ harriet4332263 two excuses. First, “Agent”. I knew it was Constable. I recognized the painting. The moment I had this memory of talking to someone from the agent …September 15, 2022
Although it is very nice to see the sportsmanship between the two Danger! competitors, I don’t think anyone would blame Luigi de Guzman for his actions, because he was just playing along and anyone would take the opportunity to do it again. He could not have known that the host would react in different ways to similar scenarios.
Harriet Wagner addressed her own mistake, calling the eventual winner “generous” for apologizing, admitting the critical backlash from the general public.
Luigi, so generous. You can’t guess the referee. Also, it was MY brain that made me say “Angela”. I still have no idea where it comes from and can only put it in my house. $ 4000 error. You’re a gentlemanSeptember 15, 2022
There are many examples of Danger! annoying fans on some gaming events, but it’s always nice when the contestants are so nice to each other when those times come.
