Cobra showrunner Kai explains why they didn’t cross the “tipping point” in season five

Attention! The following contains spoilers for cobra-kai Season 5. Read at your own risk!

cobra-kai took his karate combat to a new level in season 5 when all the heroes unite to defeat Terry Silver and his new comrades fully committed to Cobra Kai. Things got so intense that this season also saw bloodshed and severed appendages, but even though Chozen Toguchi got very close, everyone survived. It turns out that the showrunners considered killing the characters last season, but ultimately revealed that they have a reason not to cross the “tipping point” in season five.

Co-showrunner Josh Heald spoke with Variety about season five and Chozen’s big confrontation with coward Terry Silver (who in the end It fell on Daniel LaRusso in a poetic way ). In the battle, Chozen appears to be killed when Silver hits him in the back with a katana. Chozen later turns out to be injured, but he calls the wound a “superficial wound”, indicating it is not fatal. Heald admitted that there were discussions about a character who was killed or seriously injured and why they ultimately didn’t:

We thought about someone seriously injured at the start of Season 5. What could happen to Kreese in prison, what could happen with a Silver-Chozen, Silver-Daniel round 2 fight in the finale? We have decided to take things literally and not to meet people who kill each other in karate. It was something that was discussed, ‘Have we earned the right to enter this stage?’ In the end, I felt like, for this season, he had passed the tipping point, where it’s hard to imagine being invested in other elements of the story. He may have played too important a supporting role.

It appears that killing someone in season five, despite the cliffhangers with Chozen and later John Kreese, was eliminated as a possibility. Apparently, cobra-kaiShowrunners didn’t think this was territory they wanted to explore, despite previous films like Karate Kid part II he certainly played bad murders. (However, Chozen has changed a lot. ). In the end, killing someone felt like a major escalation of violence in the main story, so I can understand why they resisted.

That said, there is something in Josh Heald’s answer that points cobra-kai he’s holding the door open to potentially kill someone in the future. The fact that Heald says “for this season” makes it seem like death isn’t entirely out of the question. Options can’t be ruled out when it comes to this show. Note that these guys got it discussions about what they would do with Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce, though there’s no indication she’ll ever join the show.

The finale of the fifth season cobra-kai organizes the Sekai Taikai, an international karate tournament for which Daniel and Johnny’s dojos have qualified. Perhaps the International Tournament could bring to the fore even more formidable villains, or even a Rocky IV –international brawl that ends tragically with the death of a main character. The only thing I know for sure is that I will hold on tight netflix subscription to watch next season and find out when the fugitive John Kreese might strike next time.

cobra-kai Seasons 1-5 are currently available to stream on Netflix. Review everything now and see how much the action intensified from the beginning to the last episodes.
