Bette Midler explains an idea they had for a Hocus Pocus sequel that would be tied to the original

When was it announced that Hocus Pocus 2 the plans were in motion , it was time to think about the perfect way to bring the Sanderson sisters back to life. After all, it’s been 30 years since we’ve seen the sun rise. – spoilers! – turns Winnie to stone and Sarah and Mary to dust. Bette Midler explained an idea that she popped up for Hocus Pocus sequel that would tie in with the original film.

The first in sight of Hocus Pocus 2 shows that the Sanderson sisters are back with the OG cast reprising their evil roles. According to uh , the three leads spoke to the film’s director, Anne Fletcher, about what to include in this Disney sequel when editing. Midler shared an idea that would tie in with the original.

we are also launching [a scene about their purgatory period], is one of the things the three of us get together and talk about. Where have they been for the past 30 years? But, in the end, it fell.

I can imagine a scene like this perhaps at the beginning of the film, as the last film ended with the disappearance of the witches. Kathy Najimy, who played Mary Sanderson, said she had phone conversations about character plots and arcs, that while she wanted the “delicious” flavor of the previous film, they also wanted to bring something new to it. .

While the opening sequence of the original film showed what led to the Sanderson sisters’ initial demise in the 17th century, Anne Fletcher explained that the sequel’s opening scene would be more plot-based.

In the opening sequence of the film, we get a little bit of history from our witches and from Billy. We kissed, pardon the pun, about Billy’s appearance, the world they lived in and what happened to the witches. I’ve always missed the first one. Like, what are witches like? I had this question, the script came out and I loved the 1600 opening. 1600 and now they are the same. There is no difference. I just want to point out the irony of this. But, in the joy of the film, you can see the younger version and have fun and understand why and what happened to them.

Although we know that the original actors playing the sisters will be back and there will still be some tie-ins. However, the character of Allison it will not make an appearance as well as another popular Hocus Pocus character Binx played by Jason Marsden will also not return. The duo of brothers Max and Dani, played by Thora Birch and Omri Katz, will also not be in the sequel. Fletcher’s reasoning because these OG stars aren’t coming back it’s because he couldn’t include them in the movie. If it were up to me, I would have asked the original characters to somehow help the young protagonists of this long-awaited sequel deal with the sinister sisters as they did years ago 30 years ago. But on the bright side, Doug Jones will return to play friendly zombie Billy Butcherson. So at least the 90’s generation will have this to expect.

Like all nostalgic films that make a long-awaited comeback, I’m confident there will be a mix of old and new flavors that today’s audiences will enjoy. You can find Hocus Pocus 2 in you Disney + subscription September 30th.
