The Goodnight Mommy reviews are here and critics seem to agree on how Naomi Watts’ thriller compares to the original.

Remake and reinventations are always in fashion, even when the the horror genre has pushed the boundaries past years. But Naomi Watts proved it with The ring that adapting foreign horror films can have fantastic results, and is ready to try again with the next release of Goodnight Momso it will be available Subscribe Amazon Prime September 16. Can this Austrian remake, directed by Matt Sobel, live up to the original, which was one of them the best horror movies of this century ? The critics are out there, and the critics seem to agree to answer this question.

Naomi Watts will play the titular mother, whose face is covered in bandages after alleged cosmetic surgery. When her twins (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their country home, it quickly becomes apparent that there is something different about their mother and the two begin to wonder who they live with. Let’s see what the critics say.

Megan Navarro damn disgusting rated the film 3 out of 5 skulls, praising Naomi Watts’ “captivating” performance, which critics appreciated more than those of the Crovetti brothers. There’s more character development but less fear in the updated version, according to the review:

Sobel’s new version and story may better obscure the truth, making those revelations more difficult. Some gruesome horror moments and a gripping performance by Watts also elevate this remake. Goodnight Mommy doesn’t have the same level of palpable terror as the 2014 version, but it’s an effective introduction for those unfamiliar with the story.

Patrick Cavanaugh from comicbook.com he also rates the film 3 out of 5, agreeing that something is lost in Matt Sobel’s decision to focus on different aspects of the narrative than the Austrian original. However, these reviews disagree when it comes to the actors, as this review claims the Crovetti, and particularly Cameron, are on par with Naomi Watts and without the confident performance of the trio. Goodnight Mom it wouldn’t be a success. This reviewer says:

The narrative in both films is undeniably engaging, keeping the audience alert to what this family is doing and what is the truth in the matter. While this build works on its own as a relatively electrifying experience leading to an unexpected ending, it still feels like a contained version of the source material. The casting absolutely elevates the intimate experience, making it something worth pursuing for horror fans. Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala will likely be left behind.

alisian wax collider is on the same page, calling this movie a great thriller, as long as you’re not familiar with the original. With this condition in place, the examiner assigns the new version a grade of B, but this grade drops to C when he compares it to the Austrian version:

The original Austrian film, released in 2014, looks much more like a horror film than this American remake, directed by Matt Sobel. As it stands, it’s a great psychological thriller. If you haven’t seen the original (which I had), this will make you guess right to the end. Is it really mom under these bandages or is it some kind of sheath? And why do you want the children to stay out of the stable? It’s intriguing, it’s tense, but it’s not scary. No fear of jumping; nothing to irritate the disgusted.

The remake that falls into the category of psychological suspense rather than horror, like the original, is a recurring theme in many reviews. David Rooney of THR Like his peers, he says he won’t keep anyone up at night:

Here tension and suspense are sacrificed. The filmmakers seem more interested in exploring the rupture of sacred trust between a mother and her children through psychological drama than fears. It’s a pretty good option, but not a particularly exciting one in this story. The evil distortions of family ties in the Austrian film were genuinely subversive. Sobel and Warren’s version insists on grounding everything in a trauma so carefully identified that it’s likely to see the big breakthrough coming.

Michael Nordin from Variety says the movie was better than he bargained for, but there’s really no reason to have a remake of the original, which is less than 10 years old. However, this may come as a pleasant surprise for those unfamiliar with the twist of the original:

So, are babies delusional or is “Mother” not Mother at all? Goodnight Mommy nunca lo hace obvio, defending las líneas entre el paranoico thriller y el psychologic horror de manera más efectiva de lo que cabría esperar de una nueva versión cuyos cambios en el material de origen no requieren el tipo de vendajes con los que se cubre su Star. lines that separate the villain from the victim, roles that go back and forth between the children and the mother.

All reviewers seem to agree that the Naomi Watts-directed remake falls short of its Austrian predecessor’s horror, but those new to the story are likely to appreciate the psychological thriller. Goodnight Mom will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, September 16.
