Big spoilers for Shazam! fury of the gods He is waiting for us, so read at your own risk.
Shazam! fury of the gods is finally here and introduces fans to the exciting next chapter in the story of Billy Batson and his adoptive family, who are also part of his superhero cohorts. While the sequel’s main story is relatively self-contained, it also includes references to the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, which is now morphing into the DCU. As a result, fans were treated to a great DC cameo (which sadly got ruined in a commercial) . It’s a good time but, as Mary Bromfield Grace actress Caroline Curry revealed, casting didn’t really work with said actor.
The film’s third act has Billy Batson battling the evil Kalypso, who has taken control of the dragon Landon and is wreaking havoc in Philadelphia after planting the mighty Tree of Life. Unsure of how to defeat the villain, Billy realizes that the dome (in which Hespera has locked the city away) does not react well to his lightning bolts. With this, the dying Hespera shrinks him, trapping both Batson and her maniacal sister. In the dome, Billy overloads the wizard’s staff with its electrical charges and manages to defeat Kalypso. Though she sacrifices herself in the process, she is later resurrected in the realm of the gods after Diana Prince, aka Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, appears and reloads her staff.
The scene, which also features Prince restoring the realm of the gods, was certainly exciting for fans, and Grace Caroline Curry (who was also promoted to the role of superheroine Mary) I was also thrilled with it. However, the star explained to Gossipify that there were a lot of logistics that kept the stars from filming with Gal Gadot. When asked if she had shot Gadot, Curry replied bluntly:
well i don’t have it [laughs], which was a good thing… I also think scheduling and projects and I mean it was like in another country or something. Like we’re literally… when you try to green screen someone, you still don’t know if you’re going to be able to pull it off. So the funny thing is we were like, ‘Do we get Gal? Will we get that Wonder Woman moment? And we were shooting stuff just in case, anyway, and knowing that, well, maybe it’s just a joke, you know? Maybe it’s just the “Headless Wonder Woman” gag.
The actress seems to be referring to Widely discussed headless Superman moment which happened during the final moments of the original 2019 film. Some were disappointed when the camera didn’t pan out to reveal Henry Cavill as the person wearing the red and blue suit. So those who have seen fury of the gods They will surely be happy that Gal Gadot appeared in this cinematic outing. It’s a bit ironic that even though fans expressed their desire for a full DCU cameo, the stars themselves weren’t exactly enjoying it from BTS’ perspective. However, Grace Caroline Curry can see a silver lining in the situation:
So I haven’t met her yet. [laughs] [But] the costume, as cheesy as that sounds, to have the costume on set, his costume… Just having the costume on set was amazing.
This final appearance from Wonder Woman will likely be even more special for fans as the character’s cinematic future is up in the air. The same goes for Billy Batson and his reunited family. However, the co-director of DC Studios James Gunn has denied the rumors of the death of Diana Prince, while Shazam! director David F. Sandberg appealed to fans on the future of the franchise. Hopefully, fans will get to see more of these characters in some capacity in the future. But otherwise, I’m glad we have at least one scene where Billy and (his crush) Diana cross paths in a sweet (and funny) way.
