The life of legendary entertainer Whitney Houston has been filled with incredible successes and devastating defeats. An unforgettable talent, she will always be known for her powerful voice and iconic music video look. Both occupy a central place next movie I want to dance with someonewhile the story of Houston’s rise and fall finally gets biographical treatment.
Written by Bohemian Rhapsody Anthony McCarten and directed by Harriet Kasi Lemmons, the latest musical biopic that appeared with Naomi Ackie, last seen Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, like the late great Whitney Houston. This first trailer, posted by sony to support her next film, she shows brief glimpses of Houston’s life and appearance, as we see her grow from supporting singer to full-fledged pop star.
Along the way, we are shown some milestones in Whitney Houston’s career. I want to dance with someone it looks quite complete. We can even see Ackie dressed in looks ranging from music videos to songs like the title hit, as well as “It’s Wrong, But It’s OK”. The highlight of the trailer is the singer’s reenactment of “The Star Spangled Banner” performance at Super Bowl XXV; such an iconic performance that it was sold as a music single and VHS.
So far, Naomi Ackie seems to be sinking into the role of Whitney Houston. I want to dance with someone The star owns every second of screen time, especially when experiencing those classic Whitney moments. This alone begs the question of how much of Houston’s acting career will be shown in the story. Like some of Whitney Houston’s best movies The bodyguard and The Preacher’s Wife could be used to keep telling the story of his life, we see the memorable moments of those films come to life.
Another point that stands out is to what extent I want to dance with someone will delve into Whitney Houston’s personal issues, or her tragic death in 2012. Neither seems to be hinted at in this first sequence, and the involvement of a key actor in the Bohemian Rhapsody some members of the public may wonder how or if these points will be addressed.
Despite being an Academy Award-winning hit, the 2018 biopic was criticized for cleaning up too much of Freddie Mercury’s personal story; a statement that actor Rami Malek could also refer to. So much so that when one of the producers of this film joined a Michael Jackson biopic in development, there was an explicit promise to avoid “sanitized representations”.
I want to dance with someone may not be as wild as other 2022 music biopic films, such as Baz Luhrmann’s predictably insane work Elvis, but he doesn’t seem afraid of breaking some hearts. There is still time for the world to speculate on exactly what we will get from this film, as it hits theaters on December 21st.
