Nick Schager of The Daily Beast don’t kick with ghost, calling the film by far the worst film of the year. Rarely have two such charismatic stars generated less sparks than Ana de Armas and Chris Evans, the reviewer says, partly because the script “crumbles with every line of dialogue.” The review continues:
Ghosted is a star-studded big-budget action story premiering on Apple TV+ on April 21, though a more fitting destination would be a dark cabinet on a high shelf where no one could find it. Without a single compelling element or exchange, this fiasco sounds like an exercise in would-be Knight-and-Day in eliciting annoying reactions: groans at its creepy one-liners, gasps at its insane twists, and rolls eyes at its awful Desperate CGI and cameos. . It appears that ChatGPT wrote it, and the fact that it hasn’t is all the more damaging to those who have.
Mick La Salle of the San Francisco Chronicle challenges the larger subgenre that promotes the idea of self-actualization through murder. To say the least, it sounds like a perversion of the traditional romantic formula. The implicit idea behind virtually all romantic films is that love is an education that forces people to grow up. In Ghosted, the vehicle of this expansion is violence and mass murder. In a whimsical, satirical, or dark comedy context, it might work. But Ghosted has a light tone and a lot of body. It’s cheerful and cute, and there are a lot of dead bodies. As such, it is unpleasant. There are beautiful people, but it’s a bad movie.
Luke Y. Thompson of the AV Club given ghost to D+ and was among the critics who compared it unfavorably to great romantic action movies AS Romanticize the stone, only with sex change. From Review:
It’s definitely a measure of the fall of the star system that so many A-list actors have agreed to be in Ghosted, both in leads and in cameo roles. This action-rom-com coming to Apple TV+ barely feels like a first draft in every way, from the flimsy script to the clunky, crude CG to the lazy music choices (a car chase set in “My Sharona” here, a fight punctuated with ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ there). That it comes from Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher and Deadpool and Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is downright intimidating; they either didn’t care or they lost their skills.
The critics may not have liked it ghost, especially the CGI and the script, but the audience should always feel free to decide for themselves.
