POLL BFMTV – The French divided on strikes at the refinery: 42% support, 40% disapprove

Fuel shortages currently affect nearly two out of three French people across the country. Given the situation, 79% of those surveyed consider that Emmanuel Macron and the government are not up to the task.

The shortage of fuel at the stations persists in almost the entire territory, due to a large social movement that affects the French refineries. According to a new “Opinion Live” survey conducted by the Elabe institute for BFMTV and published on Wednesday, almost two out of three French people are affected by lack of fuel.

In detail, 21% of the French people surveyed say that it is impossible for them to find gasoline and 43% that they have problems but manage to find it. In the territory, the inhabitants of the northeastern neighborhood (80% cannot or have difficulty finding gasoline) and the southeast (70%) are the most affected.

In the eyes of the French, the shortage is mainly due to the behavior of certain motorists, against the striking workers, the management of the oil groups and the government.

79% consider that the executive is not up to the task

However, 8 out of 10 French people believe that the executive is not up to the task. In fact, 79% of French people surveyed in this survey believe that Emmanuel Macron and the government are not handling the situation adequately.

With the exception of Emmanuel Macron’s voters, the criticism is widely shared by all categories of the population and other electorates.

Weaker support than during other recent mobilizations

As for the conflict that currently opposes the employees of the oil groups and their leadership on the question of wages, the mobilization is moderately supported at the national level. In fact, 42% of French people approve of the strike movement, while 40% disapprove of it.

This rate of support is lower than most other categorical mobilizations measured in recent years. For example, the ER staff protest movement had 88% support in 2019.

Consequently, given the shortage in a certain number of gas stations, 51% of the French believe that the government should requisition striking workers to guarantee the supply of gas stations. On the contrary, 48% of those surveyed consider that striking workers should not be requisitioned and that the right to strike should be respected.

Survey carried out on the basis of a sample of 1,000 people representative of residents of mainland France over 18 years of age. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee after stratification by region and agglomeration category. Internet interview from October 11 to 12, 2022.
