Government launches program to reduce dropout and dropout in higher education

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education will start a program on Friday with the aim of reducing dropout and dropout in higher education, especially aimed at new students.

The “Program for Promoting Success and Reducing Abandonment in Higher Education” will be presented at a seminar on the same topic taking place Friday at the University of Minho, in which the Minister Elvira Fortunato and the State Secretary of Education Superior, Pedro Teixeira.

In a statement, the guardian explains that the aim is to consolidate the impact of financial support measures and innovative teaching and learning actions already underway in universities and colleges under the “Skills 4 post-Covid” project.

On the other hand, the program meets the government’s target of achieving an average higher education attendance rate of 60% among young people aged 20 and 50% among graduates between 30 and 34 years by 2030.

“Promoting a quality higher education system should include strengthening tools to anticipate and mitigate situations of failure and abandonment,” the ministry said.

According to the note, these tools intervene early in the identification of risk factors and in the promotion of teaching and assessment methodologies “that promote the quality and depth of learning”.

The program is primarily aimed at students entering higher education for the first time, an option the ministry justifies “because of the importance of this early stage in students’ onward journey”.

The seminar to launch the initiative will also showcase mentoring and mentoring projects and good practices, as well as three projects to predict abandonment and failure using artificial intelligence.

The initiatives of the universities of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Porto and the Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e Ave aim to create a tutoring program supported by artificial intelligence, a predictive analysis model based on sociodemographic information and academic performance of students. previous years and a warning system that makes it possible to identify and monitor risk situations.
