“The PS has no direction or captain”: Olivier Faure criticized by his opponent in Congress

After several Socialists decided not to vote on the LFI motion of no confidence on Monday, Hélène Geoffroy criticized Olivier Faure, judging that the PS is “a party where invective has replaced debate”.

Every chance is a good one to take. Three months before the congress of the Socialist Party (PS) in Marseille, Hélène Geoffroy, once again a candidate against Olivier Faure, is firing on all cylinders. On Monday, the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin, also a fierce opponent of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), came out of the woods again to scratch the First Secretary of the PS.

At issue: the motion of censure filed by La France insoumise (LFI) following the government’s use of 49.3 on the Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS). If the majority of the Socialists voted in favour, twelve MPs from the group, such as Valérie Rabault, did not want to do so because of the votes cast by the National Association (RN).

“The result of this day is a divided socialist group in the National Assembly and a party that no longer has a captain, a party where invective has replaced debate and the decision of a small clan, the vote of the militants,” Hélène lashed out. . Geoffroy in a press release.

According to the councillor, “Olivier Faure and the national leadership have chosen sound and fury”, following “Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s instructions repeated at will by his lieutenants”.

“Suspend the participation of socialists in the Nupes”

The objective of the maneuver is clear: take advantage of every gap in the Nupes to try to legitimize his candidacy. The socialist thus calls for a change of course.

“The next congress of the PS will be an opportunity to put a stop to this drift, to suspend the participation of the socialists in the Nupes, to return to the left the ideological corpus that allows it to unite in clarity,” he writes.

Within the left-wing coalition, no-confidence motions created debate last week. First, on the extreme right. Which voted twice in a week for dispositions of this type presented by de la Nupes, then by the rebels. For LFI’s part, Jean-Luc Mélenchon summed up his people’s strategy on France 2: “Breaking down [le] government”. Even if the RN votes for his motion of no confidence.

Within the Nupes, some do not want to follow this path. If it was mainly the socialists who were divided on Monday, environmentalists and communists, such as Delphine Batho or Fabien Roussel, also chose not to vote favorably on the LFI motion of censure.

“Continuous Rampage”

Second divergence: the use of the motion of censure. The rebels say they are ready to respond to every use of 49.3. “We don’t want to trivialize the fact that the government arrives and says ‘the texts will pass as they are,'” MP Clémence Guette explained last week on France Info.

Opposite, the other components of the Nupes warn against the “banalization of the motion of censure.” Olivier Faure repeated this Monday in the hemicycle his “point of disagreement with the rebel group.”

“With the repetition of 49.3 and its reply, the motion of censure, the risk is that of a continuous uproar that will only benefit anti-parliamentarism. This risk, here, everyone must measure it”, warned the deputy from Seine-et-Marne. A way also to make their independence heard.
