“Deputy, it is not a living immunity”: Darmanin and Bernalicis oppose after the Sainte-Soline clashes

Clashes opposed police and protesters this weekend during a very tense demonstration in Sainte-Soline, in Deux-Sèvres. An environmentalist deputy even claimed to have been beaten by the police on the sidelines of this mobilization against the construction of a basin. Asked about it by a member of Nupes, the rebel Ugo Bernalicis, the Minister of the Interior criticized the behavior of the parliamentarian.

The gendarmes on one side, the demonstrators on the other, and a basin in the middle. This weekend there were many clashes between the police and environmental activists gathered in Sainte-Soline, in Deux-Sèvres, to denounce the construction of a water reservoir there. For the public authorities, it should only be used to innervate the surrounding fields, but its detractors criticize a hoarding of water for the benefit of the agri-food industry. Upon arrival, the balance is high for both sides: the demonstrators lamented 50 wounded, including five hospitalizations, the police mentioned 66 wounded in their ranks.

Lisa Belluco, an elected Green MP in Vienne, says she herself was beaten during these tensions. Questioned this Wednesday in the National Assembly by the rebel deputy elected in the North, Ugo Bernalicis, the Minister of the Interior condemned the alleged attitude of the Viennese parliamentarian as well as, more broadly, the “unacceptable behavior of a certain number of elected officials”. .

“Deputies are not above the law”

Gérald Darmanin first referred to the video -shot from the side of the gendarmes- in which Lisa Belluco seems to go to meet them, surrounded by her tricolor scarf and with her arms raised.

“A deputy is not a living immunity,” he said.

“He must respect all the rules of the Republic. When you want to be respected, you have to be respectable. The deputies and senators are not above the laws of the Republic and the deputies of the Nupes are not above the laws either. neither do all the other deputies”, he continued.

“You are not Gandhi”

Given the separation of powers, the representatives of the Nation -who embody its legislative dimension- occupy a special place in the institutions. But according to Gérald Darmanin, the “greatness of the parliamentarian” lies elsewhere: “It is precisely to respect the laws that are approved because the people are sovereign.” “And sadly I see regardless of this weekend and the violent demonstrations that we’ve seen, the unacceptable behavior of a number of people who are elected,” he said later.

The Interior Minister ended his remarks with a final sword directed at the opposition: “You are not Gandhi, you were obviously on the side of those who attacked the gendarmes, with 15 cm stones, whose jaws were crushed.”
