To protest against the new 49.3 triggered by the government, the LFI deputy Rodrigo Arenas appeared this Thursday in the hemicycle with a “striking” bracelet, before being rejected by the president of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, and taking it off. He had claimed in the morning to be on strike.
“I like the caretakers. I am officially on strike but I am not stopping my work. I want to say that Parliament’s working conditions are not respected,” the elected official explained to BFMTV.
A gesture “that contravenes the regulation”
As announced, he was installed in the hemicycle with a white bracelet “on strike”. Thus dressed, he followed without incident the beginning of the session of questions to the Government before being called to order by the owner of the hanger after about twenty minutes.
“I would like to ask Congressman Arenas to please remove the bracelet he is wearing on his left arm, which contravenes the internal regulations of our Assembly,” launched Yaël Braun-Pivet (Renaissance).
The President of the National Assembly cited article 9 of the General Instructions of the Office, which specifies that “the clothing adopted by the deputies in the chamber must be neutral and similar to that of business. It may not be a pretext for the manifestation of the expression of any opinion.
A “particularly childish letter”
He then criticized Rodrigo Arenas for having sent him a “particularly childish letter”.
This letter is a strike notice “for the period between Thursday, November 3 and Tuesday, November 8, 2022”, due to the new use of article 49.3, but also due to “the abusive attitude of the Government towards the deputies and the national representation as a whole” and the “almost systematic rejection of opposition amendments”.
“We exercise a mandate entrusted to us by the citizens, we are not in a situation of subordination to anyone, so we do not have to go on strike,” responded Yaël Braun-Pivet in the hemicycle, launching the deputy for Paris: “ Grow a little “.
Rodrigo Arenas then removed his bracelet in protest.
“We are all pretending to have a debate here”
On Wednesday, after the announcement of Elisabeth Borne’s 49.3, he had already left the Cultural Affairs Commission of the Assembly to protest, during the hearing of the Minister of Higher Education, Sylvie Retailleau.
“Here we are all pretending to have a debate on an issue that is not going to take place, and we are stripping ourselves,” denounced this elected, before “saying goodbye” to his colleagues.
The prime minister activated article 49, paragraph 3, of the Constitution for the fourth time on Wednesday to approve the entire 2023 budget project without a vote in the first reading in the Assembly, where the Macronists are deprived of the absolute majority. 49.3 immediately interrupted the debates.
In response, the LFI group announced the presentation of a motion of censure against the government.
