The mayor of Condeixa-a-Nova, Nuno Moita, has resigned as leader of the PS district in Coimbra, DN has learned.
The mayor was sentenced to a suspended sentence last Thursday for favoring corporations when he was vice president of the Institute of Financial Management and Justice Equipment (IGFEJ).
In a publication on his social networking page on Facebook at the time of the sentencing, Nuno Moita stated that “fate willed” that he would be sentenced on his birthday for “a trial to favor companies from Condeixa”, when he was vice president of the IGFEJ, related to events that took place between 2010 and 2012.
The conviction was reported by the magazine Saturday, which reported that the mayor in Lisbon was sentenced to a four-year suspended prison sentence for the crime of economic participation in business, not prevented from taking up the position of mayor of Condeixa, the new .
In 2019, the Lusa bureau noted that the Central Court of Criminal Instruction decided not to bring seven defendants to trial, including Nuno Moita, who was accused of attributing works directly to a friend’s company, Armindo Marto, also accused in the process.
The facts in the indictment, which were filed in response to an anonymous 2013 complaint, related to five privately awarded rehabilitation works.
At the time, Judge Carlos Alexandre did not confirm the MP’s contention and understood that “the assumptions leading to the consideration that the participation of these defendants is sufficiently charged strengthen the possibility of acquittal in the seat of the court, given the facts that imputed to them”.
“Later, after an appeal by the Public Prosecution Service, I was charged again and now I was convicted in the first instance, albeit with a suspended sentence, in a way that I find absolutely unfair,” said Nuno Moita.
In the publication he posted on Facebook, the mayor emphasizes that he will “appeal to the limits of what justice allows him”.
“I have many mistakes, but this one [de] I have none to accuse me. I have limited myself to inviting these companies,” emphasized the leader of the PS district of Coimbra, justifying the publication to “avoid abuse and abuse of this situation.”
The Lusa office tried to get clarification from the mayor, but without success.
