“Something serious”: Braun-Pivet’s call for calm after Dupond-Moretti’s arm of honor in the Assembly

The Keeper of the Seals admitted to having made two arms of honor in the direction of the president of the LR group in the Assembly. He finally presented his “apologies” to Olivier Marleix as well as to “the national representation”.

“I hope the government is respectful of the institution I preside over.” Invited to franceinfo this Wednesday morning, the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, did not minimize the incident that took place at the Bourbon Palace on Tuesday. In full chamber, the Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti admitted having made two arms of honor in the direction of Olivier Marleix, president of the LR group.

“I told him that if the facts we were talking about were proven, it was something serious,” said Yaël Braun-Pivet.

“I told him that he had to apologize to the institution, to all the parliamentarians, to the president and if that gesture was directed at a parliamentarian, an apology for this parliamentarian,” he completed.

Exchanges with the Prime Minister

Indeed, according to Éric Dupond-Moretti, these gestures were not directed directly at Olivier Marleix but “at the presumption of innocence” since he camouflaged them when the deputy mentioned the “accusations by members of the government.” The former lawyer was accused of illegal taking of interest by the magistrates of the Court of Justice of the Republic.

“If they had been committed by a deputy, there is no doubt that these gestures would have resulted in a strong sanction,” Olivier Marleix lamented Tuesday night.

To which Yaël Braun-Pivet replied that it was not in her power to impose sanctions, precisely because Éric Dupond-Moretti is a member of the government. However, the president of the National Assembly claimed to have spoken with Elisabeth Borne about it.

“I hope the government is respectful of the institution I preside over,” he said.

“Let’s see what needs to be done,” said Yaël Braun-Pivet, however. He asked to be able to view the recordings of the chamber to “see what the materiality of the facts was”, specifying that Olivier Marleix could also access them. Several deputies have called for the resignation of the Minister of Justice.

The tensions of society “meet in the Assembly”

“We are witnessing very lively, intense debates, because all the political forces of our country are represented in the National Assembly, so the tension that exists in society is normally going to be found in the National Assembly”, Yaël Braun-Pivet details. .

Thus, he deplores the “excesses on the part of the deputies”, lamenting that “sometimes these excesses can also intervene on the part of the Government”.

“Everyone needs to regain their composure,” he adds.

“We have to ensure that there are debates that are respectful of everyone, respectful of their interlocutors but above all with the French who elected us or, when one is a Minister of the Republic, with the French who govern”, concluded Yael Braun. -Pivet.
