Miscarriages: unanimous vote in the Assembly for better support for women

One “in four pregnancies” ends in miscarriage and “one in ten women” faces this ordeal throughout her life, recalled the deputy Sandrine Josso, who keeps the tally.

Unanimously, the National Assembly voted on the night of Wednesday to Thursday a bill to better support women after a miscarriage, with psychological support and sick leave without a waiting day. Approved at first reading, this text initiated by MoDem deputy Sandrine Josso, a member of the presidential majority, must now be examined in the Senate.

By way of amendment, the Government has added a measure already revealed by Elisabeth Borne that establishes a paid sick leave without a waiting day for women who have suffered an abortion, unlike a classic sick leave.

This “lifting of the deficiency will take place as soon as possible and at the latest” on January 1, 2024, stressed the Minister of Health, François Braun.

A “miscarriage trip”

Environmentalist Marie-Charlotte Garin and several left-wing elected officials have called to no avail for an “additional tool”: a specific leave of three days off in case of miscarriage, leaving women the choice between this leave and sick leave. disease. Some voices of the majority spoke in his favor.

The sick leave “makes it possible to guarantee confidentiality” in particular towards the employer, François Braun replied.

At the opening of the debates, the deputy Sandrine Josso returned to the traumatic and “unfairly trivialized” experience of spontaneous abortion. One “in four pregnancies” ends in miscarriage and “one in ten women” face this ordeal in her lifetime, she said.

The text establishes for each Regional Health Agency (ARS), as of September 2024, a “spontaneous abortion course that associates medical professionals and hospital and liberal psychologists”, so that women and their partners are informed and oriented accordingly. systematic way.

The bill also allows midwives, not just doctors, to directly refer their miscarriage patients and their partners to a health insurance-approved psychologist.

This orientation would be given within the framework of the already existing “MonParcoursPsy” scheme, which allows you to benefit from sessions with a psychologist, with the support of health insurance and complementary health.
