The independent deputy in the parliament of the Azores justified this Thursday that he had withdrawn from the parliamentary advocacy agreement with the regional government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) due to “repeated interference within the executive departments”, “uncomfortable appointments” and ” satisfying whims”.
In a statement, Carlos Furtado explained that “the decision has been taken” and that “the continued approval of separate initiatives in the Regional Assembly, just to satisfy the whims of parties that sell their parliamentary influence dearly, is something unacceptable”.
The independent deputy broke the deal with the regional executive of the Azores on Wednesday after liberal initiative deputy Nuno Barata did the same with the parliamentary advocacy deal he signed with the PSD.
Despite the “decoupling” of the commitment with the governing parties, Furtado assures that he will remain “the responsible deputy that the Azores deserve”, guaranteeing that he is not “stuck in positions” and is available to return to the “past life “. if the representative of the Republic imposes early elections.
“Despite withdrawing from this commitment, which has been repeatedly violated by the parties that make up the coalition, I will continue to strive to be the responsible deputy that I have always tried to be. The Azores deserve our best attention and respect”explains.
“I am not tied to any political office and if the final result of my actions is to hold new elections, by imposing the representative of the Republic, I will return to my former life, with the sense of accomplishment,” continues he.
The independent, who was elected by Chega but left the party in disagreement with the leader, also criticized “recurring interference within regional government departments” and “uneasy appointments that happen every day”.
“The non-compliance with the initiatives agreed at the signing of the parliamentary advocacy agreement and, finally, the disastrous terms of reference for the sale of SATA Internacional, left me with no other solution but to withdraw from the parliamentary advocacy agreement I signed in 2020″justifies.
Furtado says he does not renounce “values” and is “tired of seeing separate policies to satisfy the whims of people who think only of political positions and protagonism”.
“There is no money or time to feed this state of affairs, the Azores will always come first,” he says.
The government of the Azores, in the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition, on Wednesday lost the support of the only deputy of the Liberal Initiative (IL) and the independent parliamentarian, who no longer has an absolute majority in the Regional Legislative Assembly .
The IL deputy broke the parliamentary advocacy agreement he had signed with the PSD after the October 2020 elections, won by the PS, justifying the decision with the non-compliance of the social democrats, followed by the independent deputy (ex- Chega) Carlos Furtado, who also withdrew from the agreement he had with the coalition.
The three parties that make up the regional government (PSD, CDS-PP and PPM) have 26 deputies in the Legislative Assembly and now only have the parliamentary support of Chega deputy José Pacheco, representing 27 seats out of a total of 57 , so lose the absolute majority. The opposition now has 30 deputies, up from 28 before.
A source in Pedro Catarino’s office told Lusa on Wednesday that the Republic’s representative for the Azores will not take a position on the end of the parliamentary accords, allowing the Legislative Assembly to continue its work and “resolve the issue”.
The PS won the regional parliamentary elections of October 25, 2020 in the Azores, but lost the absolute majority, which it held for 20 years, by electing 25 deputies.
On November 7, the representative of the Republic nominated the leader of the regional structure of the PSD, José Manuel Bolieiro, as president of the regional government. absolute majority in the legislative assembly.
On the other hand, Pedro Catarino underlined at the time that the PS did not present a “government coalition” despite the election victory.
