Montenegro: “We go to Europe to win”

There is still more than a year to go before the European elections, but Luís Montenegro, president of the PSD, has already outlined criteria for choosing names and wants to “enrich” the orange list with “people from society”. The goal, he says, is to “strengthen” the Social Democratic delegation in the European Parliament.

“We are going to the European elections to win and to strengthen the representation of the PSD in the European Parliament,” he said, admitting that he has not yet chosen names, but has already outlined criteria for the candidate list.

“The PSD will have a list that can express the quality of our leaders, our militants and also include people from society that will enrich the role of our group in the European Parliament,” he said, after being questioned about the possibility of the party that invites Rui Moreira, the current mayor of Porto, to lead the list.

“I believe there are options that can improve the PSD list, there’s no doubt about that,” he said, pressing whether Rui Moreira would be a resounding name.

Montenegro spoke in Brussels, on the margins of a meeting with the President of the European Parliament, on the eve of the European summit and the summit of the PPE, the political family of the PSD, in which he will participate tomorrow, also with a meeting with the President of the European Commission.

The trip to Brussels is therefore not intended to talk to current MEPs. By the way, Montenegro even left a guarantee: “I did not come to deal with this matter.”

When asked about when he will present the candidates, he assumes he does not yet have a predetermined calendar, but “it will be in time for voters to mature their decision”.

Abstinence

Luís Montenegro also drew attention to the dates on the table at European level for holding the 2024 European Championships, since in the case of Portugal, dates that contribute to abstinence should be avoided.

“As we know, there was an initial proposal for them to take place on May 26. There is an objection from Germany, I believe due to the fact that there are elections in two regions,” he explained, noting that “It is the intention of some countries that they can take place on June 2”.

“There is one certainty I have, in Portugal, the European elections on June 9, a Sunday before the June 10 holiday, is an invaluable contribution to a very high level of abstinence that we must all fight,” Montenegro said, with a call to António Costa: “I hope that the meeting of the European Council will be strong in its arguments and will be successful in the claim, which can only unite the Portuguese parties, that the elections will not take place on the eve of June 10 holiday next year.”
