The British cyclist Ethan Hayter (INEOS) won the first stage of the Tour of the Basque Country in the sprint on Monday, becoming the first leader of the individual general classification after reaching Labastida.
Hayter, 24, completed the 165.4 kilometers between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Labastida in 4:01.24 hours, beating the Swiss Mauro Schmid (Soudal-QuickStep), second, and the Spanish Jon Aberasturi (Trek-Segafredo ), third. .
Due to bonuses given at the finish and at other points in the race, Hayter has a four second lead over Schmid and six over Aberasturi.
All the Portuguese in the race arrived with the same time as the winner, with Rúben Guerreiro (Movistar) in 26, Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) in 63 and Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) in 77.
On Tuesday, the second of six stages connects Viana with Leitza in 193.8 kilometers, with a second-category mountain count installed just before the finish line.
