Coming this spring of 2023, Netflix has decided to crack down on account sharing, so everyone who takes advantage of their service will checkout. This June 22, a study by BearingPoint France evaluates the habits of the French in this area. It is based on a February 2023 Opinion Way survey of a sample of 2,263 people.
According to the data, the champion password sharing platform is none other than Salto. For their part, Netflix and Paramount+ face 35% of subscribers who share their passwords with family members, compared to 34% for RMC Sport (belonging to Altice France, like BFMTV) and 30% for Canal+.
The gaming sector is also affected: almost a quarter of Xbox Game Pass subscribers (23%) share their subscription with a third party, compared to 19% for PlayStation Now.
The supply of streaming music is also affected, with 26% of Apple Music subscriptions shared, compared to 24% for Deezer and 22% for Spotify.
Unlike platforms like Netflix or Disney, which can define the location of a home thanks to access to the Wi-Fi network, music applications are designed to be used primarily on the move.
In 2018, Spotify had established tests to fight against the sharing of passwords, based on geolocation. Faced with the anger of users, the company had given up.
